Benevolent Neglect

Every day it’s the same old thing...variety.

I get a kick out of this line. It’s from a Bugs Bunny/Yosemite Sam cartoon from the ‘60s. Look it up. The line rose from the recesses of my memory while I prepared to write this offer. I love variety and encourage my clients to drink all styles of wine. “Drink With Diversity.”

Variety comes two ways in this offer of Benevolent Neglect wines. Three wines, six grapes. Three wines, three very different styles…different experiences, if you will. Equally good in different ways.

Ben Brenner and Matt Nagy of Benevolent Neglect launched in 2016 with one wine, a “Las Madres Vineyard” Syrah, Carneros 2013. Since then, they’ve expanded to a half dozen wines per vintage, more or less. Tiny production: 50 to 200 cases per wine made. The wines are individualistic, generous in flavor and precisely balanced. While not being dogmatic about grape ripeness or alcohol levels, the BN wines are consistently high 13s to low 14s% alcohol for the reds.

I have three wines in my Benevolent Neglect wine offer for your consideration. Red, Rosé, White. Pricing and discount details are below. Let’s start with the GSM Red Blend 2016 ($40), a Southern Rhone Valley style red blend. Breakdown is 70% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah. Gorgeous wine, full of spice, sweet & uplifting strawberry and plum fruits, sweet earth and charcuterie smells and flavors. A Very Good Value at $40, with a discount it’s fantastic bargain! Ben and Matt are holding 5 cases back for this offer as they’re just about sold out.

I tasted the just-released Benevolent Neglect Rosé 2018 ($25) last week. It’s 60% Mourvedre, 40% Carignane intentional Rosé. Co-harvest, co-press and co-ferment. Very much a Provence-style of Rosé in its profound dryness. White pepper, cherry and plum skins, orange zest and Provence herbs. This is the style of Rosé most pink-drinkers prefer.

The Benevolent Neglect Riesling “Nelson Family Vineyard” Mendocino 2017 ($28) captures the perfect sweet spot of big fruit and tangy acidity. It’s about crisp green apples, clover honey, yellow grapefruit, fresh pineapple and Meyer lemons, lemongrass and citrus blossoms. 12 Grams/Liter residual sugar marries the high natural acidity. OK, here we go…
